Hill House Helensburgh

After an open expression of interest we were short-listed to design a new destination visitor centre at the National Trust for Scotland's Hill House in Helensburgh designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

The inspiration for our approach was the work of Mackintosh himself including his fascination with Japanese design and in particular his watercolour painting of a Fritillaria painted in Walberswick.

The form of the building was developed to create a counterpoint to the expressive silhouette of the main house, with a simple outline and perforated screens to moderate the light to the different spaces. The visitor centre is designed to build anticipation to a visit to the house itself with an expanded programme of spaces and events to help boost the economic viability of the centre.
