Situated amongst a historic ruin, this proposal for a residential retreat in the Sinai Peninsula draws upon traditional forms of shelter to create a secluded architectural oasis.
The residential retreat is created from a single carved form, with tent and cave spaces of shelter providing protection from the desert heat. At the entrance to the building, an expansive overhead canopy creates a semi-shaded space above the historic stone ruins. This semi-covered courtyard offers an informal setting for meeting and interacting with visitors before entering the main retreat.
By contrast, the more private spaces for sleeping, eating and resting take on a cave-like quality, with monolithic rammed earth columns creating sculptural, dark alcoves, reminiscent of a hypostyle mosque.
