The west elevation that addresses Loch Awe has been kept narrow to reduce the impact on the views from below. The illusion of a ruin is orchestrated by way of the large windows, external openings in the walls, the first-floor terrace, and the corner ‘tower’. The east elevation is equally compact and overlooks a delightful private lochan which forms part of the drainage filtration system. Boreholes across the site provide fresh water and ground source heat.

...this house is a deeply idiosyncratic reflection of the clients, wrought with Highland heft on the outside, shielding a wry sense of fun, decadence and mischief within

The project finally got off the ground eight years ago when a combination of serendipitous family encounters and word of mouth led the couple to London practice Denizen Works and its Scottish architect Murray Kerr. The original brief was for a 1,100sqm Scots baronial palace with a wide front. As architect and clients got to know each other, however, ideas evolved and things changed.

‘When we started our conversations with Murray, we were in a very different place,' acknowledges the owner. 'The initial ideas we had were based on what we knew. We’re not architects and haven’t studied architectural history. We didn’t have an absolutely fixed idea of what we wanted. One of the successes of this project is that we weren’t in a rush to do anything, so the plan had time to evolve. Murray can take credit for opening our eyes to different options and solutions.’

From a distance it looks like pebbledash, or harling as it’s called here. But as you approach the monolithic grey mass, its walls turn out to be covered in chunky glass nuggets, which have been recycled from old cathode-ray tube screens. It looks like something that has been mined from some future geological seam of electronic waste, precious sediment from the Anthropocene epoch.
